Jerusalem
Masada was once the stronghold of the Bar Kochba revolt. The Qumran Caves on the Dead Sea's northern shore is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered - the earliest known surviving copies of Biblical documents made before AD 100. Visit these historical sites today. (B)
DAY 04
Jerusalem
The Israeli Museum is the largest and most important cultural institution in all of Israel. Here the Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls and artifacts found at Masada. View these treasures before travelling to Bethlehem and the Shepherd's Fields where, according to the Bible, an angel announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. (B)
DAY 05
Jerusalem/Nazareth/Tiberias
The Romans rebuilt Beit Shean in 63 BC and renamed it Scythopolis. It remains one of Israel's best preserved Roman amphitheaters. Built on the highest hill in the region, its views of the fertile valleys are spectacular. Continue to Nazareth to visit Mary's Well before reaching Cana, the site of Christ's first miracle. Overnight in Tiberias. (B)
DAY 06
Tiberias
Board a boat to Capernaum to visit St. Peter's house and the Mount of Beatitudes, the site where Christ gave his famous Sermon on the Mount. Later, drive to the Golan Heights, a natural cliff-like area of land overlooking Upper Galilee. (B)
DAY 07
Tiberias/Safed/Haifa/Caesarea/Tel Aviv
Located on Israel's Mediterranean coastline is the beautiful seaport city of Haifa. Dating back to Biblical times, the city was built on the slopes of historic Mount Carmel. Over time, it has fallen under the rule of the Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Ottomans and Egyptians. Now this bustling port city has the reputation as northern Israel's cultural capital thanks to the numerous cultural centers and museums. Haifa is also home to the Bahá'í World Center. View the astonishing city of Caesarea en route to Tel Aviv. Built by King Herod in honor of Caesar Augustus, the ancient city of Caesarea is significant in Roman and Christian history. In the excavated theater a stone was found bearing parts of an inscription mentioning Pontius Pilate - the only secular record of his existence. Overnight in Tel Aviv. (B)
